- Front squats currently are my favorite exercise to activate my quads. On Wednesdays I emphasize my hamstrings and glutes more, but I do a few exercises with quads to get in enough volume for my quads and to hit them twice per week. I do not advocate "ass to grass" squats, though I know they are effective. I feel they put your body at risk of developing some bad knee pain later on. I believe proper squat form requires you to have your thighs parallel to the floor. There should almost be a right angle made with your legs. I will admit, I think I should've gone maybe an inch lower on these front squats. Squats are excellent because they are compound lifts! (Meaning they work many muscles at once). Though I would say that if you are doing them predominantly to grow your quads the most important thing is to make sure your quads are activated. So if you feel them being used, they probably are. If you are new to squats and are having a hard time with technique take your time. If you are thinking that you want to develop big legs, but are hindered by your squat form, you can include other exercises that hit those muscle groups to supplement. This will take more time in your workouts, but will be worth it in the long run. Last thing, I would like to say I hear a lot people ask about squat width. I read some papers a while back that had shown that it does not make that much of a difference as far as muscle activation. I personally feel most comfortable with a wider stance. If you feel better with a narrow stance, go for it! Good luck with the grind!
