- More often than not, I find myself seeking the good in all things I encounter, be it a person or a place, a job, a task, a scenario or season in my life. Most of the times it is easy, because I am truly extremely optimistic on my life views. But I will admit (not so easily) that there are things in my life that have made joy seem impossible. Heartbreaks, failures, letdowns, financial setbacks, you name it and I’ve been there. Lately the biggest burden I’ve been battling is not feeling like I am enough. I give so much of myself and my joy away each day that I all too often pour from an empty cup. In every instance where my own joy supply is dwindling, something happens at just the right time to fill me back up. But, I will say again - not feeling like enough is not an easy feeling to overcome. I am open about this struggle in my life because as a human, I am not perfect, and I have things to improve on constantly. This year I did not make any resolutions or goals for myself. If you know me, this is highly unusual! Instead of setting goals this year, I want to seek self-acceptance. I want to say the words “I am enough” and mean it every. single. time. I am working on this! I know that admitting vulnerability is tricky, but it also helps build accountability in your own world. So this year, I’m going to plan to grow and accept myself, and be good to myself and to not let the dark times or hateful people I encounter dampen my joy or make me feel less of a person. This lovely photo was taken by someone I have always looked up to but haven’t spent much time with - my sweet (and talented!!) friend Katy, who is an amazing photographer (@katyweaverphotography). She not only took the time out of her full schedule to shoot some photos of me but encouraged me in a way that made me feel bold, beautiful, and brave. She truly helped start my year off by empowering me to say “I am enough” and believe it. Finding strength in hard times can be tough, but it is always possible if you begin by believing in yourself. ❤️

- Meet Marwa Al-Khamees, 21-year old third-year @pdxbschool student double majoring in Management and Leadership and Human Resource Management. Marwa was born and raised in Iraq and lived in Syria as a refugee before she moved to Portland in 2010. She says “As a Muslim woman, I want everything I do to highlight my identity to empower young immigrant girls and show them they can achieve their dreams.” She chose Portland State because she is a “city girl” and appreciates the urban campus and the proximity to work opportunities and internships. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She serves as President for the @psu_redcross, a mentor in Multicultural Retention Programs, a member of the President’s Student Council and The School Of Business’ Dean’s Future Leaders group. She is also a Student Coordinator of Orientation Programs and the Student Ambassador Program. Marwa enjoys growing as a leader and seeing student leaders develop their skills. As President of PSU Red Cross, she loves empowering PSU students to donate blood and volunteer. Marwa encourages the PSU community to support the PSU Winter Blood Drive on January 22nd - January 25th. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Marwa’s favorite place to study is at the Karl Miller Center. Her hobbies include shopping, yoga and photography. Her favorite food cart on campus is Dogs and Fries. After graduation in 2019, Marwa will pursue a graduate degree in Post-Secondary Adult and Continuing Education in order to attain a career in higher education. #myPSUstory

- She’s been my greatest friend and fan. She’s helped me be a better man. She’s got my back, she’s sweet and kind. A heart like hers is hard to find. She’s cool and funny, thoughtful too. The love of my life, that is true. She’s smart and sexy, as can be. I’m so lucky that she married me. Here’s to celebrating her kind heart, dazzling spirit, beauty, grace, patience, authenticity, sweet laughs, selflessness, strong and independent drive, wit and glow today and every day. Happiest Birthday to my best friend, my better-half, my wife, @shanns2205 ❤️

- Portland State international students like Bhavana Ramesh bring a fresh perspective to their American peers. Ramesh grew up and went to college in India. Seven years after graduating, she decided to get a master’s degree from PSU's Engineering and Technology Management program to experience firsthand the differences between developing and developed countries. “How do we collaborate?” she asks. “We have to understand both sides.” And while the experience helped educate her about Americans, Ramesh also enlightened her American classmates about India. - These are my favorite 10 photos posted in 2017. Only two of these photos were included in my best nine, a.k.a. most liked on Instagram from last year. Those nine appear in another post. - I chose to make my own grid for several reasons. One reason is because the best nine app butchers horizontal photos to fit a square crop, robbing some images of their integrity. The other reason is that these represent what images resonated with me like a director’s cut of a film. - - #bestnine2017 #bw #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephoto #blackandwhitephotography #nature #winter #snow #mydayinportland #unionstation #dtla #prom #highschool #youth #moon #fullmoon #moonset #trump #march4trump #patriotism

- These are my nine most liked photos on Instagram from 2017. Only two of these are my favorites from the year. I’ve compiled my favorite 10 in another post. - I find it interesting to see what resonates with others versus what resonates with me. - Obviously, I thought enough of these photos to post them, though there are times when I will shoot something and debate whether it’s even worth posting. Sometimes I’ll look at a picture and not think much of it, but also have a feeling that there’s something there, so I post it. Often, those photos generate positive responses. - I’m not certain what any of this means, but the feedback I’ve received has been helpful, and I am thankful for that. - - #bestnine2017 #bw #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephoto #blackandwhitephotography #nature #winter #snow #mydayinportland #ocean #beach #beach #shore #water #rainbow #waterfall #unionstation #dtla #mounthood #mountain #mthood #cannonbeach #haystackrock
