- AMBIGUOS GRIEF: Often times when we think of grief, we think of someone dying. While death is a huge part of why we grieve in life, there is another type of grief that can be equally painful, but is not discussed as much. 🧐 Ambiguous grief is the feeling one experiences when people and things change before our eyes without us being able to control or even know how to respond to it. It is the kind of grief that leaves lots of loose ends. 😢😏😔 Some examples of situations that cause ambiguous grief are: the loss of the person you used to know to something like addiction, brain injury, or the onset of mental illness. In these types of loss, the physical person you once knew is still there, but who they are and how they respond to life and your relationship are no longer the same. It can be really hard to cope with this kind of loss, because when we see the same person, we naturally want them to be who we always knew before the change. Other types of ambiguous grief can happen when someone ghosts us (and we have no idea why), when we grew up with trauma and have to grieve the loss of a healthy childhood or the loss of the possibility of getting our needs met by our parents. It can also include unexpected deaths where we never got to make amends or clean things up with the person who died, as well as things like relationships ending when and how we least except them to. These are just some examples of ambiguous grief triggers. There are certainly more. If you have been feeling sad and can’t pinpoint why, you may be experiencing ambiguous grief. - Whether there is something you've been struggling with for years, months or merely a few days, we all have our limits. Whether we consciously realize it or not. It might take sitting in ambivalence for awhile or trying to pretend that there is no issue at all, but ultimately the need for change will make itself heard loud enough so that, suddenly, you know what needs to be done. It doesn't mean it's going to be simple or that afterwards it will immediately feel better, but it does mean that you're setting a boundary for yourself that you no longer want crossed. It does mean that you recognize what you want, need and deserve. It does mean that you're brave and courageous for stepping out of something that is no longer serving you and into something different, but unknown.

- This shit is therapy. Sorry (not sorry) for the language. But MAN- if there’s anyone out there who thinks that working out is JUST working out, then you need to dig deeper. This workout was short...and the music was PUMPING. But for some reason, the tears broke free. When I start sweating, I start thinking. I think about the pain I’ve been through. I think about how far I’ve come, and far I still want to go. I think about the good, the bad, and the ugly. But mostly, I think about how good I feel. And it’s not just me, it’s science. Endorphins flow through the body when you sweat hard, and- simply put- they feel good. It wasn’t always this way. Mornings were spent with a feeling of dread. Days were spent waiting for bedtime. My heart was always pounding. My hands were shaky. My brain wouldn’t turn off. Going for a walk around the block was difficult, let alone sweating up a storm in my basement. But I also knew something had to change. I was at a point in my life where it wasn’t moving in a direction that I was happy with. It felt stagnant and unsatisfying. My anxiety was scaring me. I felt like I was in a hole. I’m SO glad I climbed out. And I can tell you how I did it. This has been such an amazing journey. I couldn’t imagine living this life any other way.

The title was “Lifestyle and Mental Health.” At the time I was feeling bored and tired of sitting and talking with people one-on-one in a room. The weird thing was I adored my clients. Truly. I fell in love with each one of them.⠀ •⠀ For months I could not reconcile how much I loved the people I worked with but not the actual work. I questioned therapy and being a therapist— the thing I most prized about myself. It was my existential crisis. The article was a godsend.⠀ •⠀ Immediately, I knew it was exactly what I wanted to do and the opening paragraph confirmed it, “Health professionals have significantly underestimated the importance of lifestyle in mental health. More specifically, mental health professionals have underestimated the importance of unhealthy lifestyle factors in contributing to multiple psychopathologies, as well as the importance of healthy lifestyles for treating multiple psychopathologies, for fostering psychological and social well-being, and for preserving and optimizing cognitive capacities and neural functions.” Heck. Yeah. Big time. This was it for me.⠀ •⠀ Many therapists are trained to assess for biological, psychological or social issues that cause disease and discomfort in our clients. Truth be told though, many of us don’t ask much about biological issues and underestimate the basics of our clients everyday life when we assess for mental health. Many of us some ask lifestyle questions during the intake or assessment phase of treatment but not regularly and not as part of the base of our work.⠀ •⠀ Since the time the article was published the evidence for implementing lifestyle changes in psychological treatment has exploded but they’re still underutilized or implemented haphazardly because there are no protocols or guidelines for their usage. ⠀ •⠀ That’s where LYW comes in.
